Dr. Osuna on Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass is an excellent procedure. The best-suited patients for this surgery are those who are diabetic with esophagus reflux. If you have esophagus reflux and undergo another bariatric surgery, your symptoms will worsen. In some cases, the gastric bypass reduces the obesity, esophagus reflux and in some cases it cures.[/success_box]

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass, otherwise known as roux-en-y (RNY) gastric bypass, is a weight loss procedure that uses two techniques to achieve weight loss.  Gastric bypass produces weight loss via two techniques: malabsorptive and restrictive.

The malabsorptive technique is achieved by re-routing or bypassing, a section of the patient’s intestine. This allows calories to pass through unabsorbed forcing lower caloric intake. The restrictive technique is achieved by making a new stomach “stoma pouch”, which is significantly smaller. This smaller stomach reduces capacity forcing less food consumption.

These two primary techniques allow patients to lose massive amounts of weight loss.  Patients can expect to lose roughly 60% of their excess weight.

Complications of Gastric Bypass

Even though 80% of all weight loss surgeries performed in the United States are gastric bypass, there are still serious complications that can arise. Just 1-5% of patients experience life-threatening complications, but overall roughly 10% experience some sort of complications.

The benign complications including wound infections, bleeding, or ulcers. Life-threatening complications include blood clots, heart attacks, or internal bleeding.  The fatality rate is 0.2% to 0.5% of all surgeries. Watch some of Dr. Jacqueline Osuna’s recent patient videos.
